I must admit, the concept of RENT made little sense to me ... until I saw it.
The parallels with La Boheme and struggling artist ... conflicts between financial security vs. struggling artistic integrity ... love ... death ... lots more going on there then just the plague ... er ... AIDS.
Maybe it's not a relatable as a musical about a green skinned witch ... loosely based from the Wizard of Oz ... but ...

I like musicals. Both on stage and in movie form. One thing about me that would make for a great homosexual if I was the least bit attracted to men sexually. Well ... I guess I'd have to start dressing better, too.
If you really enjoy a staged muscial, then it's sometimes hard to watch the changes they have to make for the big screen. I love The Phantom of the Opera, but the movie form (with Mr. Sparta himself, Gerard Butler) was not all that enjoyable. RENT I enjoyed in both forms, to a certain degree.
I did, however, really enjoy Evita, which might even rank as my favorite movie musical of the last decade. Oh ...rats ... it was made in 1996 ... nevermind ...
Other movie muscials I really enjoy include Mary Poppins, My Fair Lady, Grease, Moulin Rouge, Fiddler on the Roof ...
... does Spinal Tap count as a musical?

Hm ... I may have to revise my earlier statement ... Hedwig and the Angry Inch may be the best musical I've seen in the last decade.
Here's a link to Origin of Love ... which, if you are not familair, is taken from Plato's Symposium, from the tale of Aristophanes ...
