Not long after this strip went live, I learned that Variety is a bunch of non-source-checking asshats: J.J. Abrams has signed to produce a Star Trek film, and has an option to direct it, but they're not necessarily doing the Starfleet Academy thing. Which is good, I think, because I don't give a rat's ass about young Kirk and Spock. I'd rather see a top-down remake with the original characters recast than some revisionist history Smallville in Space sort of thing.
